Sealyham Terrier Personality traits and Temperament

They are happy go-lucky dogs who are content to be a couch potato. They only need a brisk walk or a short play time to work out their energy levels and the rest of the time they are content to hang around the owners so simply laze around. Therefore they make good apartment dogs as well as a good companion dog for older people.

Sealy’s are very lovable, but they can have a dominant personality and need a firm, consistent master. Any laxity on the part of the owner can result in the Sealy becoming an alpha dog and trying to control the owner. They are fond of chasing rabbits, birds, and even other dogs and cats. Be sure to keep them on leash when they are taken for walks. Like all terriers they love to dig and call mess up your garden. So keep an eye on them e\when they are out in the yard.

They are generally good with children and can become very devoted to them. Due to their sturdy build they can handle some rough play but it is always advised that an adult supervise their interactions with the kids. They can be very aggressive towards dogs and cats. So a proper socialization has to be done if there are other pets in the house.

They are reserved with strangers and make good watchdogs. Their bark is surprisingly loud and deep. They are not yappers and do not usually bark without a reason. They are very reserved around strangers and it will be difficult to socialize them with the strangers.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

They have a long, weather-resistant double coat that does not shed much but requires stripping or clipping in addition to regular brushing or combing. They should be brushed three times a week to prevent tangles from forming. Clipping the coat often can lead to loss of texture of the hair. Other grooming needs include dental hygiene and nail care.
