Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen Personality traits and Temperament

Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen (PBGV ) breed has a good temper, which makes them really popular, they are happy, friendly, outgoing, independent and has wide interest. They always make people happy, and show no aggression, therefore nicknamed as happy family dog. The dogs are strong and agile, therefore suitable for daytime hunting, their barking; sounds wonderful.

PBGV is a hunter, and for a dog for effectively hunt must be smart, focused, independent, and both mentally and physically fit. These little hound dogs are really spark plugs, as they are full of energy and a zest for life. They are also very curious dogs, always sniffing around the house or yard in search something.
This breed of dog is small, but really active and they require vigorous exercise to maintain their health, happiness and an even temperament. Walking for 20-30 minutes a day or opportunity to run and stretch their legs are essential.

Mental stimulation is also important to the PBGV’s strengthen their temperament. They rarely get bored or lonely, instead they will find ways to entertain them, which may usually, end up in destructive behavior; therefore it is important to give your PBGV interesting things to do during the day. Advanced training on the agility course can also help keep their minds active.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

Their coat is rough and long, with thick and short hair. The long eyebrows and beard are characteristic with a moustache. Ears have long hair and also on their tail too.

Grooming of this breed is really easy as they need to be brushed once or twice per week, just to remove the loose hair and keep the coat clean and shining. Bathing is required once in two months or occasionally. Wiping the beard after a meal helps to keep it clean

The ears should be regularly checked on for signs of wax buildup, irritation or infection. Clean them with a cotton ball and an approved cleanser.

Diet: PBGV ma y suffer from a variety of digestive problems and food allergies. So a proper diet is very essential for these breeds. The best food is either raw food or unprocessed food. If commercial foods are being used ensure that the breed shows no digestive disturbances or allergic reactions.

Allergies: They can suffer from food allergy, fleabite allergy, hay fever, and vaccine reactions. Most allergies cause only itching, but in some cases, dogs can suffer a great deal of discomfort.

Health problems: These breeds suffer from PBGV pain syndrome. This is a miserable condition with bouts of pain, fever, and/or listlessness. The intensity of the pain varies from very mild to quite severe. Other disease conditions that affect this breed are epilepsy, hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, glaucoma, persistent papillary membranes, hernias, etc.
