Pekingese Personality traits and Temperament

The Pekingese is also known as the Lion-Dog, Pelchie Dog, or Peke. The breed considered as great as both a lap dog and companion dog. They are low activity dogs and needs moderate exercise.

They have a lot of self esteem and tend to act like they are the masters of the house. They are prone to get into trouble with other dogs and most probably the owners will have to intervene and pluck them out of trouble.

They may not be the right breed for houses with small children as they are easily injured by rough handling by the kids. They do have a goofy nature that the children will love but it is not advisable to mix children with these dogs. They tend to be friendly with other dogs and surprisingly do well around cats.

They are famous for its nobility, intelligence and smartness. They are also stubborn, lovely, gentle their owners and shows great affection and apathy towards strangers. They also represents, represents courage, daring, self-esteem with its beautiful, elegant looks. Puppies with nice temperaments are curious and playful.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

They are high maintenance dogs and are not suitable for people who do not have the time or patience for this. It is imperative that to keep their coat healthy and presentable, which requires daily brushing. They are intended as a house pets therefore may be kept in a puppy cut which is much more low maintenance than a show cut. They sheds a lot, therefore regular brushing or grooming is important.

It is also important to remove dirt from the eyes daily, and from the creases on the face to prevent tear staining and avoid sores. It is also necessary to keep and maintain the fur in the buttocks of the Pekingese clean and well groomed as the area is prone to soiling. Due to their long and abundant fur coat, it is important to keep the Pekingese cool, as this breed is prone to heatstroke when exposed to high temperature.

This breed should be trained with firmness, kind consistency also using positive reinforcements such as food rewards and praise. Pekingese breed needs early socialization, exposure to many different people, sights, sounds, and experiences will help them grow confident. They make good apartment dogs, also love to run and romp and for walks. This breed is stubborn and can be difficult to train at times. 

Health Issues and Food

Diet: The daily recommended feed is 1/2 to 1 cup of high-quality dry food, divided into two meals. They are meant to be stocky, muscular dogs who feel heavy when lifted, but they shouldn’t be fat. The recommended foods items are a blend of poultry, rice, yellow corn, beet, and soy. They love to eat, and it is best to stick to a high quality protein based diet.

Allergies: No

Health problems: Pekingese are generally healthy, but like all other breeds, they’re prone to certain health conditions. Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, brachycephalic syndrome and von Willebrand’s disease are relatively common. Patellar luxation, intervertebral disk disease, cataract, cryptorchidism, ectopic cilia, entropion, hydrocephalus, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and mitral valve disease are also reported.
