Japanese Terrier Personality traits and Temperament

These dogs are also known as the Nihon Teria, Nippon Terrier or the Nihon Terrier. This vigilant, lively, cheerful dog is a very affectionate pet. They can adapt to apartment life provided they are given plenty of exercise. They do not handle extreme climates and have to be provided with a warm blanket during cold seasons. When they are outdoors, they should always be on a leash or in a fenced area as they have a tendency to chase other animals around.

They are wonderful companion dogs and needs constant interactions with the family. These dogs might get attached to a particular person in the household and will be overprotective and possessive of this person. Nihon’s are very playful dogs and loves their toys. Nothing excites than more than a plush toy or a new ball to play with.

They socialize well with older children but are not suitable for younger children. Ideally these pets are suited for households with toddlers. They do not like loud noises and the rough petting by children. They can be social to other dogs but cats better be wary of them. Because of their territorial and jealous nature they will not fit well into a multi pet household.

With his keen senses he makes a good watchdog, able to hear even the slightest sound whether awake or asleep, and ready to alert you to an intruder. He may remain aloof with visitors and can even be shy and reserved towards them.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

They have a very short coat and require minimal grooming. But since they are medium shedders a regular brushing can help get rid of the loose hairs on the body. Baths can be given once in three months. Ears should be checked regularly for any infection or bad odour. Nails should be trimmed at least once a month. Proper dental care is also essential.
