Brussels Griffon Personality traits and Temperament

They are very affectionate and intelligent dogs who are even tempered. They love a good cuddle and make perfect lap dogs. They are very lively and often stick to the owners sides. This dog does not need too much exercise every day so there is no need for daily walks. Occasional brisk walks or mild games will suffice. They tend to get attached to a single master so others in the household must learn to live with that and be patient around the dog. They adapt very well to apartment life.

He is an attention seeker and does not like being ignored. If they feel that they are being ignored, they can kick up a row. They have a very sensitive temperament and do not like to be petted and kissed. They have a tendency to snarl and bark at kids who give them unwanted attention. They may even bit out of fear. Therefore they are not suited for houses with kids. If kids are present they need to be socialised early and the children must be taught to handle the pets gently. They get along with other pets if they are socialised at an early age.

They are highly athletic dogs and if left in the yard unsupervised, can climb over fences, dig up the garden and even chase vermin. They can be extremely stubborn and once they have made up their mind, it will be difficult to get them to change it. They have a very bossy streak and if given a free run they will try and dominate everyone in the house.

They make good watchdogs and are sure to let you know when strangers approach. They have a very high tendency to bark and growl and often has to be pacified and calmed. Even though they are very lovable and intelligent dogs, they need constant attention and this breed is not the best option for everyone.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

They come in both rough and smooth coats, both of which are minimal shedders. Smooth-coated Griffons need very little grooming other than weekly brushing and an occasional bath. The rough coated variant must be brushed weekly. The coat must also be hand stripped once in 6 months. The services of a professional groomer can be used. Trimming of nails can be done monthly.
