Boston Terrier Personality traits and Temperament

The breed is a very enthusiastic, fun loving, with a goofy sense of humour. He likes the attention that the family gives him and loves to cuddle in their lap or even snuggle up in bed with them. But he can also entertain himself and does not need anyone constantly hanging around. They love toys and is seen playing with those for long periods.

Unlike other terriers he does not have excessive exercise requirement. They are content to lie around indoors and behave like couch potatoes. They enjoy a moderate walk with the family and can do well without a yard. The make excellent apartment dogs but cannot be housed outdoors.

They dote on children and are a delight around the kids. Due to their compact build they can handle a fair amount of rough play. They also get along very well with dogs and cats. They get really excited when guests arrive, and can befriend them in an instant. For them everyone they meet is a new playmate. This habit gets in the way of them becoming a good watchdog.

They are good dogs for first time owners and people who are absent from home a lot.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

They have a short, smooth coat that is easy to groom. They should be brushed weekly using a rubber brush or a firm bristled brush. They don’t shed heavily and the weekly brushing can help get rid of loose hairs. Bathing can be given when it is required. Mild shampoos can be used. During bathing care must be taken not to irritate their eyes. While grooming check for signs of sores or any other skin lesions.

They are prone to dental tartar and proper brushing at least 2-3 times a week is recommended. Nails should be trimmed monthly. Ears and eyes must also be checked regularly.

How to Train this dog

The Boston wants to please and generally a quick learner. If at times they show any unwillingness to learn, motivation can be given through food, a favourite toy or a good scratch of the ears. Heaping praises on these dogs and positive reinforcement is also crucial to a successful training. They can however be really stubborn, so persistence and consistency are needed when training them.

Health Issues and Food

Diet: They are very gassy dogs and therefore cut down on carbohydrates especially wheat and corn. Lean meat and fish can be used to feed them. Avoid over stuffing them with grains as in addition to flatulence they may also cause digestive disturbances. Commercial foods should be thoroughly scanned and only high quality ones chosen. Certain preservatives used in commercial foods can also cause digestive disturbances. They are absolute gluttons and therefore proper monitoring of feeding is necessary

Allergies: They suffer from skin allergies and if swellings are rashes are found on the skin with excessive itching, allergies must be suspected. They can have contact as well as food allergies. They can be allergic to certain shrubs and grasses as well. They are considered hypoallergenic to humans but paradoxically sometimes human dander can cause allergies to them.

Health problems: Deafness in one or both ears are commonly found, and puppies must be properly screened for this. Other disease conditions that affect this breed are cherry eye, cataracts, heart conditions, megaoesophagus, tumours and patellar luxation.
