West Highland White Terrier Personality traits and Temperament

They are also known as Poltalloch Terrier, Roseneath Terrier and White Roseneath Terrier. are a bold, confident, fun-loving, intelligent dog who can find joy in the simplest pleasures of life, such as squeaky toys, a belly rub, and food. They are energetic, people-oriented dogs, beloved and admired for their bright white coats and shiny, shoe-button eyes. They are very restless dogs and although they look like a lap dog, they are far from it. They love to run, dig and are active throughout the day. If you want a silent cuddly dog then Westies are not the breed for you. A Westie is adaptable and will do well in any type of dwelling, including apartments.

They have a strong willed personality and are capable of showing determination, devotion and affection. They are loving dogs who is good with older children. But he must have adult supervision around children, particularly younger ones. They are not very dog friendly and same sex aggression is common. Their interactions with cats and smaller animals must be supervised.

They are good watchdogs and are alert. They love people and will socialize with house guests easily if properly introduced.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

They have a soft, dense, thick undercoat and a rough outer coat and are low shedders. The outer coat can be groomed by hand stripping or clipping. If they are not clipped, then they have to be stripped twice a year. Trimming is usually needed on the feet, and around the ears and eyes. The hair on the head is often plucked to produce that definitive round shape you see on show dogs. The coat stays fairly clean and he should only be bathed when necessary. To keep that coat a nice sparkly white, the Westie requires some tidying and may need to be wiped down frequently. Check ears once a week for dirt, redness, or a bad odour that can indicate an infection.
