Tibetan Spaniel Personality traits and Temperament

They are very bold dogs with an independent spirit. Tibbies are often described as feline in their habits. It’s not unusual to find him perched on top of a sofa, chair, or other high place, surveying his domain or meticulously grooming himself like a cat. Tibbe’s must be walked on a leash to prevent them from running off to explore. Yards should also be fenced.

The personality of Tibetan Spaniels is sweet but assertive, affectionate with his family. They have a moderate activity level and need only moderate exercise which can be achieved by taking short walks. They love to snuggle with the owners and make good lap dogs. They are sensitive to the moods and needs of their families and they’re happy to try and meet them.

Although Tibetan Spaniels are affectionate toward and protective of children, they’re better suited for homes with older children because they can be injured during rough play. They generally get along well with other dogs and pets. They do well in homes with multiple dogs. They also socialize very well with cats

They are an alert watchdog but never aggressive. They may be aloof toward strangers but can become friendly with them when introduced properly.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

The Tibetan Spaniel’s medium-length double coat should have a natural appearance. No trimming is needed to make this dog look good. Brush the Tibbie’s coat a couple times a week to remove dead hair and comb the feathering on the ears, feet, thighs, and tail, and the feathering between the toes to prevent or remove mats or tangles. He sheds twice a year, and during that time, you’ll need to brush him more often to keep the hair under control. Bathe them as needed, usually every 6 to 8 weeks.
The rest is basic care. Trim his nails as needed, usually every week or two, and brush his teeth regularly. Check his ears weekly and clean them if needed.

How to Train this dog

Intelligent and willing to please, Tibetan Spaniels can be easy to train, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll always listen to you. They have a mind of their own and will ignore commands if they don’t feel like obeying. For best results, begin training early and be consistent. Tibbie is nonetheless easily trained with positive reinforcements such as praise, play, and treats when he does something you like and gentle correction when his behaviour is not its best. They are generally easy to housetrain, but crate training is strongly recommended. It will make housetraining easier and keep your dog from chewing things while you’re not there to supervise.

Mixed breeds

Tibalier is a cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Tibetan Spaniel. This sweet, happy, cuddly and playful dog is a good choice for family which can be given much attention in the home.

Tibetan Pug is a cross between the Pug and the Tibetan Spaniel. Tibetan Pug is also a socially sensitive animal, and will act according to moods and emotions it picks up from people or situations. This sensitivity, while making the Tibetan Pug a great companion, also makes it vulnerable to harsh actions or words.

Tibetan Chin is a cross between the Tibetan Spaniel and the Japanese Chin. The Tibetan Chin is a graceful and elegant, yet sprightly, dog that can be a clever and amusing companion. It actively seeks out human presence, and will suffer from separation anxiety if often left alone or ignored.
