Long haired Dachshund Personality traits and Temperament

Dachshunds (pronounced DAKS hund) are intelligent extroverts with a comical streak. They are devoted to their owners and like nothing better than spend quality time with them. They can become much attached to one person in the family and show considerable anguish and separation anxiety in his/her absence. They can get jealous very fast especially around other pets and toddlers. Therefore they are not suited for households having small children.

They have hunting and tunnelling instincts which can results in holes being dug in your garden. They have moderate levels of energy and needs daily walks which help them channel their energy. Wirehaired Dachshunds tend to be the more energetic, mischievous, obstinate as compared to the smooth haired ones.

Females suffer from false pregnancies or pseudo-pregnancies quite often and exhibits mood swings around this period.

Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding

Longhaired Dachshunds have glistening, slightly wavy long hair which gives them an elegant appearance. They must be brushed regularly to prevent mats from forming. They need to be bathed at least once a week and you must blow-dry them afterward for their coat to look good. A mild shampoo can be used to bathe these dogs. Stripping must be done at least once yearly.

Special care should be given to ears. The hairs around the ears must be trimmed and the outer ear must be cleaned regularly. Other grooming needs include nail care and dental hygiene. Trim your Dachshund’s nails once or twice a month.
