Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Personality traits and Temperament
They are very popular as companion dogs due to their loving, playful and sweet nature. They have a very dependent personality and love to be with people. They tend to follow their owners around everywhere they go. With one of these dogs in the house consider yourself having an extra shadow. Due to this nature they always need people around and do not thrive well when left alone. They make good pets for stay at home parents and retired people.
They have good affinity towards children and love kids who can play ball with them. Smaller children have to be supervised around the dogs as these dogs can get hurt very easily. They are also very friendly to other dogs.
They are well suited for apartment lifestyle and should are not fit for outdoor lifestyle. They only need moderate exercise. While taking them on walks keep them on a leash as they have a tendency to chase birds, rabbits and other small animals.
They will bark when strangers approach the premises, but are more likely to make friends with them. Therefore they are not watchdog material. They are very sensitive dogs and any scolding from the owners can cause them to sulk and whine in a corner.
Grooming, Haircuts and Shedding
The coat is of medium length, curly and real silky. Ears, legs and tail can have longer hairs. They are easy to groom and maintain. They should be brushed three to four times a week and should be bathed weekly as they can get very dirty. The hairs on the ears and legs should be checked for matting. Hairs around the foot pads should be trimmed regularly.
Ears should be checked regularly for infections. Other basic grooming practices like trimming nails and brushing of teeth should also be regularly done

How to Train this dog
They are very eager learners and are willing to try whatever is being told to them. Food rewards and positive reinforcement help ensure that training goes smoothly. Never yell at them during a training session as this can be counterproductive. They have a tendency to lick and training may help to reduce this habit, but cannot fully curb it. They can be difficult to housetrain. But firmness and persistence on the owners part can help overcome this.
Health Issues and Food
Diet: They can manipulate their owners for extra treats and a share of food off the table. No one can resist their eyes and the dogs are well aware of this. Therefore always resist the temptation to overindulge the breed as they can become fat. His food must be measure out and his feeding habits closely monitored. Avoid treats that are high in fat and never let him have a nibble at a slice of pizza or your burger.

Health problems: They are prone to obesity. They also suffer from a cardiac condition known as mitral valve disease. Other issues like Syringomyelia, seizures, keratoconjumctivitis sicca, pattelar luxation, hip dysplasia, etc, are seen.

Chilier is a hybrid dog that is produced by cross breeding of a Chihuahua and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel purebreds. The Chiliers are very active dogs and would not tire out easily. They love to run and play.
Cavapom is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Pomeranians mix. Cavapoms are companion dogs. They need to live in the house, never outdoors.
Cava Tzu is a cross breed between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Shih-Tzu. They are very active and require several leash walks a day.
